African Nations urge UN to float 2020 climate action plans

Nations that signed the Paris agreement have vowed to float updated plans this year

The Covid-19 pandemic has crippled the ambitions of the African nations which have plans to take action against climate change, media reports said. The delay has the potential to worsen the living condition of the people among the climate menaced nations.

The governments of the developing nations which are at risk due to climate change have urged the United Nations to float a robust national climate action plan for their survival in the long run. The governments expect a resolution by the year-end.

It is reported that about 195 who have signed the 2015 Paris agreement nations have vowed to float updated plans this year, with a focus on curbing planet heating emissions and adapting to the effects of global warming. However, the pandemic crisis has delayed climate change actions and has postponed this year’s UN climate summit until November 2021.

Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde, told the media, Nonetheless, the effects of the pandemic should not be a reason for countries to shy away from submitting more ambitious national plans to fight climate change. Both challenges – climate change and COVID-19 – could be addressed in a green recovery. Besides, delayed response is going to be expensive and irreversible.”

It is reported that the Ethiopian President and other leaders of the climate vulnerable forum have expressed interest toward the submission of updated plans this year.

The climate change actions need to be implemented as soon as possible amid the pandemic because of the surge in global temperature.
