Airtel Money partners with Flutterwave to enhance digital payments in East Africa

Countries like Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Kenya and Rwanda will be able to receive payments from Airtel Money customers

Airtel Money has partnered with Africa’s leading fintech Flutterwave to facilitate payment and transaction operations in Eastern Africa, according to media reports. Through the partnership, businesses integrating Flutterwave in countries like Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Kenya and Rwanda will be able to receive payments from Airtel Money customers. They will also be able to make bulk payments into Airtel Money wallets.

The new services will go live after receiving regulatory approval in the respective countries. Currently, Airtel has over 19.2 million East African customers with Global GSM, recording a 12.7 percent increase in the number of registered global mobile money accounts, primarily because of the pandemic.

According to experts, this new trend is primarily due to changing consumer behaviour, increased e-commerce, and the increased business need that are adopting more and more for convenient mobile money payment. Big businesses find this way cheaper, faster, and convenient to offer bulk payments directly to their employees or user mobile money wallets.

Olugbenga GB Agboola, Flutterwave CEO told the media, “Our business goal is to continue to support African businesses digitise their payments methods and introduce them to a world of opportunities that come with digitisation. We are excited to have partnered with Airtel Money to further advance local businesses’ payment methods which will allow them to increasingly provide more services to their customers, grow their customer base and revenue.”
