Why are we addicted to smartphones?

Our brains have become so accustomed to the sound of our smartphones that we no longer consider them distractions.

Every year Apple launches a new smartphone that comes with several tweaked features creating a buzz around the millennials. Ever thought about why smartphones are considered so important than other things, which the younger generation should be concerned about? Ever realized that your phone is distracting you from studying? It is quite evident that smartphone addiction is real.

Smartphones are constant companions whether one is sleeping, or is with friends, or even studying. Psychologists around the world have studied this particular behavioural change and are still trying to find answers to this problem.

Below are some of the reasons why you might always be glued to the smartphone:

One’s sense of self is shaped in the womb. It is after birth when that self-development accelerates. It is very obvious that the new born first attaches itself to the caregiver and later in life to materialistic things.

For example, babies cry if they are suddenly put away from their pacifiers. The same is the case with adults. Objects then become part of their extended selves.

When one holds their smartphone in hand it reminds them of their intimate moments, meaning they recollect instances from childhood or from young adult life. The brain produces chemicals — dopamine along with the love hormone oxytocin, which plays a huge role in kicking the addiction. At the same, they also create a sense of attachment.

According to anthropologist Michael Taussig, it’s in our second nature to copy, imitate, make models and explore differences. This helps one to become a better person.

Smartphones help individuals become “that person”. They help them by taking pictures, manipulating them, and even reaching out to others. By searching the internet one becomes knowledgeable.

Human brains have become so accustomed to the sound of smartphones that they no longer consider them distractions. Instead, individuals are always waiting for some of the other notifications. We keep checking our smartphones even with the slightest ring or buzz because the dopamine in our brain compels us to do so.

Keep in mind that there is always a solution to a problem. In this case, mobile addiction can easily be solved if one learns to manage their time and increase productivity on other activities. Setting a timer on your smartphone will prevent extreme mobile usage.
