Singapore’s Keppel O&M will conduct a pilot for Singapore’s first ever floating Energy Storage System (ESS). It is reported that the project will be carried out by a company called Envision Digital International along with a consortium. The project which is expected to be completed within the three years will see the largest ESS deployment to-date in the city-state
Chris Ong, CEO of Keppel O&M, told the media, “Besides supporting Singapore’s energy needs, the developed solution will have multiple applications such as supporting areas with intermittent power supply, and rapid deployment to provide emergency power for places or remote islands affected by power disruptions. It can also be deployed on hybrid or fully electric vessels to significantly reduce carbon emissions. The ESS will also explore the first-of-its-kind battery stacking solution in Singapore, potentially reducing the footprint required for deployment by up to 40 percent.”
The consortium will assist Keppel O&M to install a 7.5MW/7.5MWh lithium-ion battery ESS on its Floating Living Lab (FLL). Furthermore, a seawater-based innovative liquid-cooling solution will be used in the pilot to enhance the lifecycle of the ESS and keep the battery cells cooler.
A Smart Energy Management System (SEMS) will be integrated into the ESS to boost operational efficiency and it will also be supported by artificial intelligence and machine learning for optimising the efficiency of operations and energy usage.
The new partnership between Keppel O&M and EMA worth $7.4 million indicate the efforts of the Singaporean government towards the development of innovative energy solutions.
