Roblox introduces “Kids” and “Select” accounts, loaded with age-based safety system

Roblox Corporation is also expanding parental supervision tools to give parents more control and visibility, including access to gameplay activity and friend lists

The update integrates age checks, account settings, content ratings, ongoing moderation, and parental controls into a single framework. As per Roblox, users under 16 will continue to access the majority of their existing games, while users aged 16 and above will see no changes to their current experience.

Speaking on the launch, Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer at Roblox, said, “Children’s needs change significantly as they grow, and online experiences should evolve alongside them. With Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, we’re creating age-based protections designed to support younger users at different stages, while giving parents tools to personalize the experience for their family.”

Talking about users moving through different account tiers automatically based on age verification, “Roblox Kids Accounts,” that will cater to the 5-8 age group, will have the strongest default safety settings. Access will be kept limited to minimal and mild-rated content, while the chat option will be disabled. This feature, out of all the new updates, will have a tightly curated and moderated game catalog.

“Select Accounts,” tailored for the ages 9–15, will provide the users access to games rated up to moderate content. Chat settings will vary by age and region, apart from having additional safeguards for users under 16. It will exclude experiences involving sensitive issues, social hangouts, and free-form drawing features.

Then comes “Select,” a standard Roblox account at age 16, with features like moderation and a content review system.

“Roblox applies enhanced safety review processes for younger users, including developer verification requirements, real-time evaluation of experiences, and strengthened content review standards. These systems ensure that only approved and age-appropriate content appears in younger user catalogs,” the studio said.

Roblox Corporation is also expanding parental supervision tools to give parents more control and visibility, including access to gameplay activity and friend lists; controls for content ratings and communication settings; screen time limits and spending controls; granular game blocking options; direct chat management tools; and a game approval feature allowing parents to approve specific experiences outside default settings. Certain controls will remain active until the child turns 16.

Roblox is expanding platform-wide communication safeguards by introducing facial age checks required to access chat features. Users without completed age verification won’t be allowed to access standard accounts or chat.

“Users under 16 cannot share or view links across profiles, game pages, Community pages, or the Creator Hub. Social media links remain restricted beyond chat environments, expanding existing rules,” the studio remarked
