Orsted, JWD and Eurus to develop offshore wind projects

The three companies have been developing two designated offshore wind sites off Akita’s coast

Orsted, Japan Wind Development (JWD) and Eurus Energy have recently announced a partnership aimed to jointly develop offshore wind projects in Akita Prefecture in Japan, according to the media. Under Japan’s Offshore Renewable Energy Act of 2018, the three companies have been developing two designated offshore wind sites off Akita’s coast.

The partnership has combined leading strengths in global offshore wind and a solid local renewable development firm. Both the designated offshore wind site projects are currently in progress with the necessary permits. The consortium is entirely prepared to participate in Japan’s upcoming offshore wind auction round that closes on 27 May 2021.

JWD contributes its sound knowledge of the Japanese power market and supply chain and a strong track record in onshore wind. In comparison, Eurus Energy has been leading the onshore wind company in the country with impressive development and operational track record in the Akita Prefecture.

Matthias Bausenwein, Orsted president of the Asia-Pacific region, addressed the media and stated that the firm now has a unique opportunity and obligation to be a catalyst for a green transformation in Japan. It also considers being a key player in realising the cost-down journey for offshore wind in the country.

The consortium expressed that leveraging each of the company’s long-standing experience and knowledge and working together with local stakeholders will help to contribute to the project and a sustainable future. It is to note that the Noshiro and Yurihonjo offshore wind sites have been matured by JWD since 2017 and are also conducting site investigations that include wind measurements, seabed surveys and environmental impact assessments.
